Mazzini Square – Church of the Stigmata (Chiesa delle Stimmate)
Piazza Mazzini
Our walk begins right at the bronze statue honoring the founder of Filottrano, the proud Lombard leader Ottrano. According to legend, he gave the city its name: from “Mons Philiorum Optrani,” the Mount of Ottrano’s sons, to Montefilottrano.
In front of the statue, we can see the ancient 14th-century city walls, featuring one of the entrances to the old castle, Porta Nuova, as well as the elegant Piazza Mazzini, with its beautiful loggia and a magnificent view.
Octagonal Tower
We walk uphill along the main street and turn into a small alley, Vicolo delle Mura Castellane, on the left, to admire another element of the old fortifications: the octagonal tower and the remains of the ancient military architecture.
