Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Tornazzano

The Church of Santa Maria di Tornazzano is a place of worship located in the hamlet of Tornazzano. This temple is known as a destination for pilgrimages because it preserves a miraculous image of the Madonna with the Baby Jesus dating back to the 15th century, and the stone on which, according to tradition, Saint Rocco sat.

The church has a rectangular plan with a single nave and a chapel on the left dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a presbytery raised relative to the hall where the main altar is located. The hall is covered by a lunetted barrel vault, punctuated by round arches, with the exception of the one leading to the presbytery, which is a pointed (Gothic) arch. The side chapel, on the other hand, has a pavilion vault. The nave walls are characterized by pointed arches, all blind, except for the one that opens into the chapel.

The brick façade is divided into three sections by four plastered pilasters painted white, which rest on a white plinth and reach the summit, where a decoration of twisted columns and small arches highlights the roofline. In the central space, the entrance is positioned (framed by two twisted columns supporting a pointed arch), along with a rose window. Five pinnacles are placed on the roof, corresponding to the four pilasters and the center of the façade.

Curiosity
The name Tornazzano derives from “tornar sano” (to become healthy again), because the sanctuary is the custodian of a 14th-century fresco and a relic linked to Saint Rocco which, over the centuries, were believed to have healing powers over the inhabitants of the area. The fresco depicts the Virgin with Child, and the faithful used to rub the clothes of the sick onto the fresco to receive healing, and many graces were granted. Also inside the Sanctuary is the large Roman stone on which Saint Rocco sat to pray, and it seems that since then it has held the power to heal those suffering from osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis.
