Filottrano Town Band
An open day for a marching band is an “open doors” day (or half-day) designed to introduce the band to the community, recruit new students/musicians, and build relationships with families, schools, and associations. It is informal, practical, and engaging: people listen, try instruments, and talk.
Origins and History
- The band was founded immediately after the Unification of Italy, between 1861 and 1866, with Giuseppe Menghetti as the first conductor (Maestro), who received an annual salary of 846 lire.
- It has always been a constant presence in Filottrano’s civic and religious celebrations.
- Over the years, it has faced difficulties—such as a shortage of musicians and the two world wars—but has always managed to resurface, thanks also to the enthusiasm of the youth.
- In 1984, thanks to the commitment of several citizens (including Fammelume, Puntiroli, Borsini, Marzioni, Filippi, Cappella, Pasquini), the band was re-established under the direction of conductor Adone Ingegneri.
- Subsequently, under the guidance of conductor Roberto Gobbi, the band was renewed with a growing contribution from young talents.
Leadership and Presidency
- Since 2007, Andrea Corallini—himself a musician—has served as President, succeeding Arnaldo Cappella.
- In January 2010, Maestro Bruno Oncini temporarily assumed the musical direction; from September of the same year, the role of Director was entrusted to Maestro Gianluca Sartori.
- In November 2014, Maurizio Massei was elected President of the Steering Committee.
Recent Activities and Compositions
- In the summer of 2015, the band was conducted in concert by American composer Brian Balmages, performing some of his famous compositions.
- The ensemble currently has approximately 50 members, generally young residents of Filottrano.
Participation and Repertoire
- Organization of band gatherings: In Filottrano (1986, 1992), San Lazzaro di Savena (BO – 2002), Santa Maria Nuova (AN – 2005), and twinning (gemellaggio) with Castilenti (AQ – 2001).
- Recent participation: National and international gatherings—Prato (2007), twinning with Romagnano Sesia (NO – 2008), Anbima gathering in Monsano (2009), twinning with Harmonie of Raon L’Étape (France).
- Traditional annual events: Christmas Concert and Summer Concert, in addition to numerous performances in religious and civil settings.
Special Collaborations and Repertoire
- In 1995, the band participated in the video for the song “L’altra metà del cielo” by the local band The Gang.
- In 2016, it took part in the production of the video “Nel mio giardino.”
- The repertoire is broad and varied—including classical, modern, symphonic, military, and religious pieces—and the band is very cohesive and open to artistic experiences both within and outside the Marche region.
