The Headquarters and the Collections
The museum, established in 1967 and housed on the ground floor of an ancient building in the historic center (Palazzo Spada-Lavinj, now Beltrami-Luchetti), stands out for the particular choice of material collected: the Marche biroccio (agricultural cart). Born as a simple agricultural cart, the biroccio subsequently assumed various functions within the peasant life of the central Italian regions, eventually acquiring an aesthetic value in popular taste, which in the Marche region translated into striking polychrome decorations differentiated by geographical area.

Along the museum route, based on the division into distinct provincial areas and thanks to explanatory didactic materials, it is possible to understand the value of the individual objects, both in relation to a broader cultural context and to identify the peculiar characteristics of each zone. Alongside the carts, exhibited in their entirety, and the graphic reconstructions with indications of their structural parts, the halls also display numerous surviving detached parts of the agricultural cart (tavole dipinte [painted panels], “sfiocche”, “golette”, and others).
